The Story Behind The Name
Back in the olden days, young ladies would create a decorative piece of embroidery that would showcase their talents.
The piece of embroidery or sampler would exhibit different types of stitches thereby demonstrating the skill range and ability
of the individual creating the sampler. In a sense, it was a
coming of age for that person who had worked so very hard to create
something by hand. It was a way of communicating "I am here, look
what I can do." In many ways, this is the way that our fair state
of North Carolina reaches out to young and old alike. "Look at
me, this is what I can do. This is my natural beauty,
these are the folk that inhabit my land. These are my people,
sturdy and strong. These are my people who work the land,
who fish the sea, who teach my children, who work at the factory, who pave the roads. These
are my people who rescued those in distress from the ocean, who buried English sailors as their own."
These are the stories that have been told, and beckon to be told again.
This is the tapestry of our state.
This is the fabric of her people.
This is Carolina Sampler.
